The Theatre in the Rough Festival is a producer of new writing by young people from Greater Merseyside.

Since 2008, we have produced 63 new plays and short films by 71 writers, published two anthologies, and attracted live audiences of over 22,500.

We originated as a self-contained festival with an attached professional development programme. Following an Arts Council England-funded public consultation and R&D period in 2013, the Theatre in the Rough Festival has now moved to a year-round producing programme — meaning more projects, more often.

In 2014/15, we have been working with some of Merseyside's biggest venues, producing 13 new audio plays, 6 pieces of radiomontage, as well as commissioning our first short films.

Our mission is to respond to the needs of emerging theatre-makers by producing their work in imaginative ways — and places — that genuinely engage people who don't normally take punts on new plays by unknown writers.

The Theatre in the Rough Festival is a Registered Charity, No. 1133246.

“Seeing my work performed was just surreal. It didn't really sink in until a few days later because I was on such a high.”
